UDC's CITIC promotes a pioneering quantum infrastructure for research services

The center achieved a budget of 1.04M€ to create a new infrastructure for the development of projects that will have an impact in areas such as health, industry or cybersecurity.

Universidade da Coruña has secured over 1€ million in funding to strengthen research in quantum computing and communications at its Centro de Investigación en Tecnoloxías da Información e as Comunicacións. The investment, backed by Spain’s Ministry of Science and co-financed by the European Union, will support the creation of advanced infrastructure that combines classical and quantum computing systems. This hybrid approach aims to tackle complex problems and drive innovation in fields such as healthcare, cybersecurity, and materials science.

The new infrastructure will provide specialized equipment and foster collaboration across disciplines, allowing multiple research groups and external partners to experiment with quantum technologies. As noted by Eduardo Mosqueira Rey (co-IP of the NEXT-GEN-SOMNUS project), “quantum computing is getting closer and closer to our daily lives… it could have a direct impact on many areas, from healthcare to industry.” It also reinforces CITIC’s growing reputation in the field, building on its pioneering role in Galicia alongside the Centro de Supercomputación de Galicia and its participation in major European initiatives like NEASQC and QEX.

Overall, the funding marks a strategic step in consolidating CITIC as a key player in quantum research, with a focus on real-world applications such as secure communications and advanced computation. The initiative is designed as an open, collaborative platform that encourages knowledge transfer to industry and society, supporting economic and technological growth. It also aligns with the university’s broader commitment to high-quality research and innovation in areas expected to shape the future.
